HISTORY

Ballard is the smallest and oldest community in the Santa Ynez Valley.

Ballard was founded in 1880 at the location of a Wells Fargo stage line station, being named by George Lewis after William Ballard, the former proprietor, who ran the station from 1862 to 1870. The first school, Ballard's Little Red School House, was built in 1882 and is still in operation today.

    We've been here a few times and always enjoy our stay. The rooms are quiet. Actually the entire property is incredibly quiet. We love sitting on the porch in the afternoons and evenings. The breakfast is delicious (an actual hot, made to order breakfast, not a "continental breakfast"). There's coffee in the lobby all day and wine in the evenings. The rooms are comfortable, showers are great. Staff is helpful

    What a great boutique hotel. Comfortable rooms and lounge areas, good breakfast with fresh, warm pastries filled by a good choice of breakfast. Afternoon wine and nibbles. The friendly staff made sure there was plenty of wine for the guests. The wine was surprisingly good and branded Ballard Lane. Perfect location for touring the local Happy Canyon wineries. Great for adults but I don’t think kids will be too happy there (no TV’s).
